Clients undertake sampling for Polychlorinated Dibenzodioxins and Dibenzofurans (Dioxins and Furans) in accordance with BSEN 1948/USEPA 23 using an isokinetic sampling train.

Prior to sampling, MLS will pass the following components of the train – A resin trap filled with XAD-2 which has been pre-cleaned and spiked with the required C-13 standards; a filter and an empty container for washings. At the end of the sampling all components are placed in the box and returned to MSS (UK) for analysis.

In the Millbrook laboratory at MSS, analysis is performed to using solvent extraction followed by chromatographic clean-up and High Resolution GCMS using the latest Micromass Ultima Autospec instrumentation. Samples are analysed for the 17 target dioxin/furan congeners to enable calculation of the I-TEQ value with results reported as total and I-TEQ. In order to compare measured data with limit values the results in ng/sample require to be divided by the air sample volume in m3 and then corrected to the appropriate reference conditions.

PCBs and PAHs

In addition to the analysis of dioxins and furans as described previously, or as a standalone service, MSSL can undertake the analysis of PCBs and PAHs for stack samples. Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are sampled using an isokinetic sampling train and analysed by similar methods to Dioxins and Furans. MSSL can provide the appropriate sampling kits on request.

In the Millbrook laboratory at MSS analysis is performed using solvent extraction followed by chromatographic clean-up and High Resolution GCMS using the latest Micromass Ultima Autospec instrumentation. Samples are analysed for the WHO-12 group of Dioxin-like PCBs and/or the USEPA 16/Waste Incineration Directive (WID) groups of PAHs.

Gas Composition for Process Stack/Landfill Gas

In addition to the measurement of trace components of a gas stream, a gas compositional analysis can also be provided using a range of sampling media. This can often be of interest for waste gasification/pyrolysis processes or landfill/biogas plant.
